It’s no easy feat designing a good user experience. But it is even harder to design one that doesn’t nudge users down a path that’s in the interest of a company. Such dark patterns, coupled with a designer’s unconscious bias, are incompatible with human-centered design. We should be careful that business objectives do not get in the way of the principles of ethics.
In recent years, many ethical gaps have been exposed. From uncontrollable propaganda on Facebook to unwanted surveillance and data collection, the systems we’ve created are failing in real time and affecting our society in vast and devastating ways. As designers, isn’t it our moral obligation to create something that has a positive impact on the world? Consumers value the trust they give businesses and when companies design experiences that are ethical, transparent, and put the users’ interests first, the results are better user experience and higher customer retention and loyalty.
